The Philadelphia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation is
the founding chapter, formed around the kitchen table of a mother
of a child with Type I diabetes. Since that meeting 26 years ago,
the Philadelphia chapter alone has generated millions of dollars
to fund the world's finest diabetes research and serve the more
than 250,000 Delaware Valley Residents with diabetes.
JDF's main objective is to support and fund research to find
a cure for diabetes and its complications. A recent study
conducted by Lewin-VHI concluded that U.S. health care
expenditures for people with diabetes exceed US$130 billion per
year--one out of every seven dollars spent on health care in the
United States.
To that end, our fund-raising and educational events are:
- April 13, 1996
- "Pumps, Jets & Pens! Oh, My!," Twelve
Caesars Conference Center, 4200 City Ave., Philadelphia,
Pa., 9 a.m. to noon. This seminar about the latest
insulin-delivery technology features sessions for
people with diabetes led by people with
diabetes who will demonstrate why "it's not just
syringes anymore." This is your opportunity to learn
about the features and benefits of a variety of new
systems and which could be right for your family and your
children. A continental breakfast will be served and free
parking will be available. To register before April 6,
1996 for this free seminar, please call JDF at
215/567-4307 or e-mail us at philadelphia@jdfcure.com.
- April 28, 1996
- Vacation Auction, Valley Forge Hilton, Valley Forge,
Pa. Hundreds of items - ranging from international
vacation packages to weekend getaways and other
entertainment packages - which have been donated to JDF
are auctioned to the highest bidders. The 1995 Vacation
Auction generated nearly $70,000 for diabetes research.
- May 6 - 12, 1996*
- McDonald's LPGA Championship, DuPont Country Club,
Wilmington, Del. One of the four "majors"
on the LPGA Tour, this event brings together the
worlds best women golfers in heated competition.
JDF's Philadelphia and Delaware chapters work together to
provide and coordinate Tournament volunteers, and a
portion of the proceeds benefit both chapters.
- May 10, 1996
- "Salute to Philadelphia Super Achievers
Ball," Hotel atop the Bellevue, Philadelphia, Pa.
The 1996 theme of the Chapter's annual black-tie gala is
"Philadelphias Salute to Super
Achievers". The dinner is $225/plate ($150/plate for
anyone 35 and younger), and the event raises $250,000
annually for diabetes research. For a list of honorees
please e-mail us at philadelphia@jdfcure.com
or call at 215-567-4307.
- June 3, 1996
- Safeguard/Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Golf Classic,
Talamore at Oak Terrace, Ambler, Pa. Foursomes and
individuals join forces on the links to benefit JDF. Cost
and further details will be available at a later date.
- June 23, 1996
- Car Sweepstakes, location to be determined. JDF
offers $100 chances through a national direct-mail
campaign. First prize, a car; second prize, $5,000; third
prize, two round-trip air tickets anywhere in continental
North America including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean
(certain restrictions apply). This year, the Car
Sweepstakes is projected to raise $100,000 for diabetes
research.
- Sept. 29, 1996*
- WALK FOR THE CURE, Fairmount
Park in Philadelphia and Norristown Farm Park near Blue
Bell. The Philadelphia chapter is home to one of the
fastest-growing Walks for the cure in the world!
Thousands of walkers form hundreds of "teams"
and walk to raise money for diabetes research. Fairmount
Park's route is six miles, and Norristown Farm Park's is
five miles though walkers can complete as much or as
little of the route as they wish. Despite torrential
downpours on walk-day, the 1995 event generated $425,000
for diabetes research, the most ever generated by the
Philadelphia Walk for the cure.
- On going*
- Administrative Support, JDF Offices, 2200 Ben Franklin
Parkway, South 105, Philadelphia, PA 19130.
