JDF How to Become a Legislative Advocate

Help JDF Turn 32 Into $12 Billion for Medical Research in Just 30 Minutes

In Fiscal Year 1997, the Federal Government will fund over $310 million in diabetes research and $12.7 billion in medical research throughout the National Institutes of Health (NIH). With this in mind, JDF, who gives more money directly to diabetes research than any other nongovernmental health agency, invites you to become part of the world's largest fundraising effort by becoming a letter-writing advocate on behalf of medical research, and in particular diabetes research. Your participation will allow you the opportunity to tell your personal story and convey JDF's important and timely message to Members of Congress, while playing a critical role in the search of a cure for diabetes.

Diabetes is a nonpartisan disease and our members in Congress need to hear from those of us affected by and living with diabetes and its life threatening complications. By sending your e-mail and snail mail address to the address below, your name will be added to JDF's Government Relations Database. In turn, you will receive the Government Relations Newsletter, Legislative Updates, and Legislative Alerts at various times throughout the year prompting you to write your members of Congress to convey our message of a need for an increase in the amount of federal funding for medical research, and in particular diabetes research, conducted through the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The more people that respond, the more successful we will be in our efforts to find a cure for diabetes. In the words of JDF's International Chairman, Mary Tyler Moore, while testifying before Congress: "Beneath the fears, frustration, and gratitude of living with diabetes in the 1990's, there is hope, hope for a cure. The currency of that hope is research."

Please take the time to become a letter-writing advocate on behalf of diabetes research by responding now. By doing so, you can help turn a 32 stamp, a couple of times a year, into $12 billion for medical research. Please send your e-mail and postal mailing address to:
