Town Hall Meetings

Over the next six months, many U.S. Representatives, U.S. Senators, and Presidential candidates will be holding Town Hall Meetings or Campaign Candidate Debate Forums in your area. We feel it is critical for you to attend these events and to speak out about the importance of medical research funding, and more specifically diabetes research funding through the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is your duty and right, as a constituent, a taxpayer, and as someone who is deeply affected by the benefits of medical research, to tell these officials your priorities for federal spending.

With this in mind, it is crucial that you call your legislators' district offices in your area and ask them for the date, time, and place of the next Town Hall meeting. If none are currently scheduled, ask to be put on the Town Hall meeting invitation mailing list. To find out the dates for campaign candidate debates, you should call each candidates campaign headquarters and ask for a schedule of debates (these may not occur until late Summer or early Fall).

When you receive a date for a Town Hall meeting or candidates debate forum in your area, it is critical that you plan on attending. It is also important that you call the JDF Government Relations Department in DC to let us know when and where these meetings will occur so that we can get the word out to other volunteers in your area.

The most important question to ask elected officials or candidates at these forums is "The 104th Congress made federally funded medical research through the NIH a national priority, if (re-)elected to the 105th Congress will you maintain federally funded medical research through the NIH as a national priority by fighting and working for much needed increases?"

If you have any questions, or need any additional information, please call Bill Schmidt or Eric Schutt in the JDF Government Relations Department at 1 (800) JDF-1VOTE.
